Statement:
Shown at the Steven’s Gallery, Julee unveils 100 Not-So-Daily Paintings, which was inspired by the artist’s surroundings, particularly the messiness that accompanies motherhood. Some objects are sentimental trash like a broken rubber chicken toy while others just garbage like a little plastic spool from the inside of a dental floss dispenser. Some are natural “clutter” like flowers or a piece of gravel. Some are pieces of food like a fruit loop and others treasured objects like inherited salt and pepper shakers. “All of the objects are a part of my world right now, they make up a time capsule of little details that are part of my daily geography.”
Each painting, all oil on paper, was painted within the course of a day. This series started as a challenge to paint 100 daily paintings in 100 days. Inspired by the 100 day project, Julee made it to day 20 and then realized painting 100 consecutive days was unrealistic with her busy mom life and adjusted to 100 Not-So-Daily Paintings. The paintings took 30 minutes to 3 and a half hours, averaging an hour and a half to paint each one. Every paintings is a still life. A study of light. Different mediums and techniques were used and the challenge of 100 quick paintings was an excellent way to explore skills, technique and medium.
